Position on good government initiatives:
- Would you support reinstituting the statewide public advocate and making it a directly elected position? Yes. It is important that the public advocate is beholden only to the people of the state of New Jersey instead of the governor who appointed them. Otherwise, there is always a question of the integrity of the office. An appointed advocate may be questioned on issues of corruption – whose interests is the advocate representing?
- Would you support measures to increase voter participation (eg. same-day registration, early voting, vote by mail)? Yes. A personal crusade of mine is to finally get to automatic registration for all citizens at age 18. New Jersey does a good job allowing vote by mail. The only thing they could do better is advertising it.
- Would you support ethics reforms that would require broader disclosure on financial information and the release of income taxes by candidates for public office, as a means for regulating campaigns and limiting corruption? Yes. Anything that would limit corruption is a positive step.
- Would you support changing the nominating process for members of state-wide Commissions and Boards to have panels of nonpartisan experts nominate candidates, with full public disclosure of the candidates’ credentials, and to have the legislature vote on the nominations? Yes.
- Would you support placing a nonpartisan commission in charge of the legislative redistricting process? Yes. If you look at a map of legislative districts in New Jersey, it’s clear that special interests are in play. A nonpartisan group should be tasked with making sure the lines drawn truly represent the people of the district and state.
- Would you support public funding of campaigns for all statewide offices, including the legislature? Yes. It just levels the playing field. When one side “buys an election,” with corporate money, they don’t represent the people, they represent the corporation. A person should be elected because they are a good candidate for that office, not because they are a good fundraiser.
- Would you support making the state legislature full-time and prohibiting simultaneous holding of other paid positions? If we want the “everyman” or “everywoman” to run for office, making it a full-time job may keep those people from running. I do think there should be limits to taking multiple political positions simultaneously.
- Would you support reforming New Jersey’s Primary electoral ballots to give all candidates an equal chance of being elected? If the county committees were fully stocked with representatives, it would be a more fair process. But too often there are not enough committee members and therefore the county boss has exaggerated power.
